In the not too distant past I always joked that if I make a habit of checking my M-pesa expenses I’d faint. I’ll admit that for as long as I’d been an M-pesa user, I had mostly just been wallowing in blissful ignorance regarding just how much costs I’m incurring to transact on the platform.
It was not for lack of time or facilities with which to track my expenses. It was just as I mentioned earlier, a case of blissful ignorance.
Things change though and now I’m finding myself needing M-pesa statements for my business operations and reconciliations. It is therefore very timely for me that Safaricom has introduced a service to enable customers access monthly statements free of charge via email. This is one of the improvements that has been made possible by the relocation of Safaricom servers from Germany to Kenya in April last year.
“Every month an average of 30,000 customers’ visit our Retail Centers specifically seeking to receive printed M-PESA statements, as a prerequisite to accessing credit from financial institutions or for business reconciliation purposes,” said Betty Mwangi, Director – Financial Services, Safaricom.
The launch of this service does not mean that customers cannot continue to go for their M-pesa statements from physically from Safaricom outlets across the country.
This development comes hot on the heels of another M-pesa service hakikisha, which enables subscribers to be able to see who they’re sending money to before they hit the send button. Customers can cancel a faulty transaction before it is too late.
To access the statements, customers dial *234# from their handsets and follow prompts to enter the preferred email address they would like their statements sent to. Customers have an option of accessing one-off statements for three, six or twelve months in one go. Have a practical look at the process here.
