British Airways has revealed the world’s most romantic destinations. The airline revealed the six most romantic locations by exposing chalk work of the countries’ favourite destinations. Art work that took local artists, Nes Blundell and Desmer Glenn, 18 hours to complete.
- The Eiffel Tower: Paris
- A beach in Mauritius: Mauritius
- The Colosseum: Rome
- Big Ben: London
- Mosi-oa-Tunya or ‘the smoke that thunders’ in the Piazza at Melrose Arch: Johannesburg
- Victoria Falls
It looked at desirability and popularity, and revealed the destinations through pop up street work. “We chose street art to announce this year’s lover’s list, because a pavement artist’s depiction of an iconic sight is exactly the sort of nostalgic memory couples treasure for years after a romantic holiday,” says Edward Frost, British Airways regional commercial manager for South and East Africa.
The airline is offering up to 25% off on charges to these and other European, southern African, and North American locations until 18 February.
Paris
The first thing that probably crosses your mind when you think of Paris is the Eiffel Tower. Besides offering exceptional views of Paris, it’s perfectly picture worthy. Just before you head home however, don’t forget to visit the Montmartre, a hill in the northern part of the city, which also ensures memorable views. After you feel like you’ve taken it all in, how about checking out the Pont Des Arts? The pedestrian bridge spans the Seine and provides picture-postcard views of the Île de la Cité, one of the two remaining natural islands on the river. Street musicians also add to the atmosphere. While strolling through the narrow streets of Paris, take a few stops at the several cafés and try their coffees and croissants.
London
How about a lovely picnic on Hampstead, before renting a rowboat and enjoying the swans on the Serpentine? If you both prefer a simple walk, then you can choose to take a stroll through Hyde Park. Unbelievably, there are several quiet areas if you’d like to enjoy each other’s company in more serene places, including the house boat-lined Grand Canal, where you can have a peaceful walk not far from the busy Edgware Road
New York
As one of the busiest cities in the world, you’d undoubtedly assume that this land belongs to the lonely workaholics, but love has managed to creep up in there somewhere, and there are several institutions to show for it. From walks in Central Park, carriage rides, to ice skating at the Rockefeller Centre, there are probably more options than you have time for. Here are a few inexpensive experiences that might make you fall even more in love with one another:
- Go stargazing at the Lincoln Center the high-powered telescopes will give you an incredibal view of the constellations
- Take a trip on the bright red aerial tram to Roosevelt Island. An escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, you can enjoy each other’s time by kite flying in the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park.
- From there, you can go kayaking on the Hudson. Get a double kayak so you can take turns to take the pictures while your partner paddles.
Rome
You’ve seen how romantic it can appear from the movies. The Trevi Fountain is a definite must go. Legend has it the throwing a coin into the fountain will ensure a return visit to Rome. Afterwards take a walk along the three tiny streets (the tre vie) from which it takes its name. If you feel eager enough to take another stroll, enjoy one through the Trastevere’s narrow streets taking in the roof gardens and spacious piazzas. During the day it is a quiet neighbourhood, but comes to life in the evening and if you’re a foodie, it’s one of the best places to experience genuine Roman dining.
Victoria Falls
If you’re both up for an adventure, take a trip to Victoria Falls. With its white-water rafting and bungee jumping, there are several sporty activities that’ll leave you spoilt for choice. Research has it that enjoying more adrenaline packed activities with your partner makes you admire each other more, due to the increase in heart activity. On the other hand, if you’d want to add a few romantic moments to an adrenaline-filled holiday there are a few options.
You may want to consider a quiet cruise down the Zambezi or take a stroll through the Victoria Falls Rainforest followed by High Tea on the Stanley Terrace at the iconic Victoria Falls Hotel. If you’d like to combine a bit of both, take a helicopter ride called the Flight of Angels, this gives you an iconic look at the Falls.
Mauritius
Last but not definitely not least is Mauritius. If merely watching the sunset at the Flic-En-Flac is not enough of a romantic experience, take a sun downer horse ride. The La Cambuse beach is another must see, particularly since you’ll probably be the only ones there, what’s more romantic than a little privacy on a beach? The Cap Malheureux, also called the Cape of Misfortune due to a previous shipwreck, would leave no unfortunate memories if you headed there today. After taking a few selfies near its small fishing village and little red-roofed Church, you could take a morning stroll before finding a spot with views of the offshore islands for a picnic lunch.
