Top Kenyan Photographers Awarded In Photography Awards 2016

Top Kenyan photographers were recognized and awarded in an awards ceremony held at National Museums of Kenya on Sunday 19th. The awards play an important role in nurturing and improving photography in the country and this is more than welcome. We’ve seen how photographers have of late been bringing out the beauty of our country time and time again, showcasing a Kenya that the international community and even many Kenyans may not have seen.

The awards this year recognized 22 photographers. Sadly, there was no overall winner because the judges felt that the level of entries did not quite attain such a level and as such did not want to lower the expectations and standards by selecting an overall winner.

There were winners all the same and here is the full list:

News – Daniel Irungu Mwangi and Kevin Onnoka (Series)

Daily Life – Georgina Goodwin (Single and Series)

Sports – Larry Asego and Suleiman Mbatiah (series)

Nature – Mwangi Kirubi and Abdulrahman Mutuma (series)

Portraiture – Migwa Nthiga and John Wambugu (series)

Creative – Larry Asego and Iteba Alloys (series)

Most Promising Young photographer of the year – Churchill Oele and Peter Ndungu (series)

Peoples’ Choice Winner – Richard Alele

The awards which are organized by PAWA254 and sponsored by Canon saw photographers bag up to 1.124 Million in prize money.

Good news for upcoming photographers who would like to up their game. In partnership with Canon and Photographers Association of Kenya, PAWA will be rolling out photography classes so that we nurture young talents in the society.
