Safaricom PostPay – Why It May Just Be The Plan For You

Last year, Safaricom unveiled ‘For You’ – a promise to its subscribers that it would be simple, transparent and honest. This was during the telco’s 19th birthday where it also introduced non expiry data and made other commitments like 50% bonus for voice and SMS, speedy service in customer care shops, and a reduction in the number of USSD codes.

Safaricom also promised continuous customer friendly changes over time and one of them came to life in March this year with the introduction of a revamped PostPay product – data, voice and SMS which are bundled and available on a 30 day basis. A re-working of the old PostPay to make it easier and more economical to use.

I must admit that for me and I believe for many others user who would otherwise fall within its consumer bracket, the earlier PostPay sounded like something other people out there should have. Not exactly elitist but maybe an out of my league product at the very least. Revamping the product brought it closer to the people and also fell within Safaricom’s promise of simplicity. A product that was easier to identify with and even fall in love with and therefore ‘For You’.  And here are a few reasons why…

The PostPay pricing plans are offered at five fair price points to accommodate different people’s communication needs and budgets.

  • For Ksh.1,000/- customers get 5GB data, 400 minutes talk time and unlimited SMS.
  • For Ksh.2,000/-, 15GB data, 1000 minutes talk time and unlimited SMS.
  • For Ksh.3,000/-, 25GB data, 1500 minutes talk time and unlimited SMS.
  • For Ksh.5,000/- unlimited data, 2500 minutes talk time and unlimited SMS.
  • For Ksh.10,000/-, unlimited data, unlimited minutes talk time and unlimited texts.

It is worth noting that ‘unlimited’ falls under fair use policy.

With PostPay, you pay your monthly bill and get on with life. Speaking for myself, this brought convenience that I did not even know I so desperately needed. Just like that and there was no more dealing with warnings of airtime run outs and top-ups. Ideally it is not that difficult to top up airtime especially for me as an everything M-PESA kind of person but hey! Any additional peace of mind in this busy life is more than welcome. With time you get used to the fact that you need little headaches and anxieties out of the way more than you realize.

The need to visit a Safaricom shop and fill out forms was done away with and PostPay was brought to the phone and therefore right to our homes and offices. PostPay is now accessible either through MySafaricom App, on web, or via USSD *544#. For the USSD option, pick option 4 and follow the well laid out prompts.

On any given day, anything you can do on phone beats creating time to go fill out paperwork hands down.

There was a time when unused data and other PostPay resources got to their outer threshold and just disappeared into the system. It is no secret that this made a lot of customers feel rather disgruntled and all sorts of unsavory words were coined against Safaricom. I firmly believe that one of the best things that Safaricom did for its subscribers is the introduction of no expiry of data and airtime.

The current PostPay was not left behind and any unused resources are rolled over to the next month. This gives customers the deserved satisfaction that all their money, no matter how much or little, is within their control.

This is not a static product. Safaricom promised PostPay customers big surprises as time goes by, like additional destinations for international calling. As at now, customers are able to use their voice allocation to make local calls across all networks and international calls to India, the United States, China and Canada. At the launch of this new service there was the mention of a device financing model where subscribers can get a device as part of their PostPay plan in future.

There is a bit of reading up to be done about PostPay but for something that we use every day, it is worth it. Do take the time to read up the Frequently Asked Questions here. Getting to know the product brings with it a whole lot of peace of mind and saved time.

Should you have a question however, there is the dedicated PostPay customer care go-to which is *200#. This will only work for those who have joined the service though. The *100# that is so much in our psyche will not work for PostPay and with the dedication bit, I tend to believe that this separation of issues will work towards faster and better services for all customers.
