The first thing that hit me about the OPPO Reno 5 upon unboxing is the physical appearance. A beautiful colour gradient that dances anywhere from orange to peach to blue and silver depending on the intensity and direction of light. because of this feature, this phone looks really great outdoors. Add to that a matte finish which means I can now say goodbye to annoying fingerprint marks, and we have a first impressions winner.
Simplicity
I have always loved simplicity and I do get this from the OPPO Reno5. The back only features the cameras and flashlight, and a clear but barely there branding at the bottom right. The camera housing protrusion is very slight, so it does not affect how the phone sits on flat surfaces. It is also clear and does not interfere with the phone colours.
The fingerprint scanner which we ordinarily see as a physical indent at the back of phones is now in-screen and therefore at the front. The discreet in-screen scanner adds to the simplicity of the phone and this is more win for users who like uncluttered designs. In-screen is also the future of smartphone security which is fast evolving over the years. Not that passwords and facial recognition are no longer in use. If anything, the OPPO Reno5 has these too for variety and layered security. Its just that additional methods are always a plus.
The OPPO Reno5 does not stop at looks. It is quite a feature packed device with superior technology, and this fits right into my life as a girl who likes cute but powerful tech around me.
Fast charging
There are many outstanding things about the masterpiece that is this phone, and what I think is the umbrella for them all is the super-fast flash charge. Because what is a great phone if you cannot use it in peace for fear that the battery could die on you?
Other than an impressive 4310 mAh battery capacity, the phone also comes with an incredible 50W adaptor which will safely charge from zero to 100% in just under 50 minutes. This is thanks to OPPO’s Voltage Open Loop Multi-step Constant-Current Charging. A term that has thankfully been abbreviated to Super VOOC. Enabling us to never worry about battery life is a clear step towards OPPO’s promise to play into lifestyle improvement for its customers.
I have covered Super VOOC in a separate article which you can catch here.
Camera
Phone photography is fast morphing into semi-professional photography with the continued upgrades in camera features. Gone are the days when the back camera for instance would be just simple with little support from other features. The OPPO Reno5 has a 64MP main camera at the back, supported by an 8MP super wide camera, 2MP monochrome, and 2MP macro. For those who may not understand all these terms and the working of OPPO’s camera, we shall have an in-depth look in another article, as well as photos that we have taken with it. For now, it is safe to say that this phone not just basic photography, but a host of features to support it.
With a 44MP punch-hole front camera, selfie lovers have not been left behind. If you have ever used a paltry 2MP selfie camera, this is a future you and I never envisioned.
AI Video
For this phone, there are new features across all the camera functions, including video which comes with dual-view where you can film two different scenes at the same time. You will also appreciate video filters, a feature that I think is really great for vLogs. Or even just every day videos to share among friends and family. AI colour portrait and beautification which are both present in the phone means that you will always look your best when recording, and if you take a little bit of time to tweak the settings, you will always have exceptional videos.
Safety
For an investment as valuable as a phone, it is always good to have the peace of mind that there is a good level of assured safety. The OPPO Reno5 comes with a custom pre-installed screen protector on top of a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 which raises the bar for protection against damage due to falls. It also has a silicone case for the back. I also feel that at just around 171 grams, the weightless nature of the phone adds to safety because if the phone slips and falls, it hits the ground with less force. The back also has a slightly rough finish which improves on grip greatly.
Storage
Now that just about everything about the phone ends in use of storage space, what is its capacity?
The OPPO Reno5 has an internal storage of 128GB ROM, which is more than enough even for heavy users. With that kind of storage and 8GB RAM, users are assured of a seamless phone experience and multitasking with zero lag. Gamers, vloggers and movie watches will all feel at home with this kind of storage and speed. Speaking of movies and series, the phone has Netflix HD Certification!
Conclusion
It is difficult to fault this phone. I have given honest and sometimes negative feedback on many gadgets before but for this one, I would comfortably give it all the stars. It is also difficult to unpack all its awesomeness in one article. It combines very enhanced features both internally and externally to make it a perfect tech companion. Easy on the eyes, light and easy on the hands, sturdy, and punchy with the technology. It has many nifty features that I’m still discovering after a month of use. The OPPO Reno5 is worth every penny. Go for it.
