Spotify has introduced a new AI function called “DJ” in an effort to enhance users’ music listening experiences through personalization. The function is reminiscent of a radio DJ, as it provides a tailored selection of music along with AI-generated spoken commentary on the songs and artists using a “remarkably realistic voice.” Essentially, the goal is for Spotify to become so well-acquainted with users that the DJ can select what to play for them when they press the button.
This feature could potentially transform Spotify into a more passive, lean-back experience for users who do not want to spend time browsing through the interface or selecting playlists. The OpenAI-powered function is still in beta testing and is currently only available in English to Spotify Premium subscribers in the United States and Canada.
The company claims that the new DJ function is a blend of its current personalization technology, an AI voice from its 2022 acquisition of Sonantic, and Generative AI through the utilization of OpenAI technology. When you engage with the new DJ feature, you will receive a personalized stream of songs that includes both new and old favorites.
This stream will be constantly refreshed, and as you listen, you will hear commentary immediately following the song it references.
