I’ve been spending some time with Tecno’s newest release, the Camon 20 Pro and loving the experience. I started my journey with the Camon series way back, with my favourites back then being the Camon C9. Fast forward and many more Camon phones later, here are my thoughts on the Camon 20 Pro.
Design
My test piece came in a stunning pre-dawn black colour with asymmetrical in-prints that give the phone a unique and premium look and feel. There is also the option of serenity blue. I love that Tecno has kept the back minimalistic especially since the in-prints already add drama. There is only the subtle Tecno Camon branding, which is well blended in, dual cameras, and RGBW camera detail. The camera bumps are quite evident but once I put the jelly cover which comes free in the box, they pretty much get flat on surfaces.
Tecno has left the whole of the left side of the phone bare save for the Sim slot which is blended in so seamlessly that one could almost miss it. On the right side we have the power button, and volume rockers which Tecno has assigned two different buttons. A lot of the features are at the bottom where we have the 3.5mm jack port, USB charging port, loudspeakers, and mic. We also have mics at the top of the phone.
This minimalistic design gives the grander features of the phone chance to shine.
Battery
The Tecno Camon 20 comes with a 5000mAh battery, supported by 33w fast charging. Fast charging really changed the game in the mobile phone industry because even when a battery threatens to run low, there is always the option to locate a power source and add some significant juice in a very short time.
For me as a heavy user, the Tecno Camon 20 battery serves me for a full day, and I’ll need a recharge by early evening. Good battery power is something I find across all Tecno phones though. Even then, I don’t recharge because the battery is flat, but because of battery anxiety. In short, the battery has a lot to go on, and the phone also has quite a number of power saving options for when things are thick.
Cameras
The Camon series has always come with great cameras since inception and the Camon 20 Pro is no exception. With 64MP back camera and 32MP sefie camera, users are assured of good quality photos in most conditions including low light which is usually quite tricky for mobile photography. Cameras aside, the phone has a lot of features for users to play around with to create unique images and videos, like the AI camera, super night, time lapse, portrait, panorama slomo video, dual video. There is also Sky Shop, quite timely at a time when galaxy photography is becoming more mainstream on mobile phones.
One major disadvantage that has plagued video content creators is camera instability and for this, Tecno Camon 20 comes in with SLR camera in-body stabilization in its Camon 20 Premier 5G version. This gives sharp images and crisp video even when taken in movement. I’ve not used the Premier 5G but for those going for it, the additional cost is a small price to pay since it solves a real need in content creation. The Premier 5G is retailing at Ksh.50,999/-
I took some photos with the phone and here are a few.
Performance
This is usually one of my favourite parts of a phone and it is great to see manufacturers continuously taking us away from struggle storage and lagging phones. The Camon 20 Pro comes with an impressive 256GB of internal storage and 8GM of RAM. This is a phone that users can store their photos and videos without much fear of memory filling up, and with 8GB Ram, it is a fast phone with no lags even for big memory hogs like gaming. A seamless experience is what every phone user wants in the end. Combined with a 6.67″ screen and a screen resolution of 1080×2400, this phone offers a pleasant user experience both for work and for entertainment.
What’s in the box?
The phone comes packaged in a compact box in which there is the phone, custom made protective jelly case, a charging brick, USB cable, comfortable and ergonomic earplugs and a SIM injector tool. There is also a warranty card and the usual user guide literature.
Conclusion
For the price of Ksh.30,999/- the Tecno Camon 20 Pro is a worthy purchase and value for money given the superior features that it comes with. For instance, just a few years ago, 256GB storage is not something we even expected in budget phones. Neither did we expect high GB cameras. I like how companies like Tecno have put good features in the hands of budget users, and not necessarily reserved for higher end markets. The devices are available at all TECNO stores countrywide as well as Safaricom shops. The Camon 20 series comes with several options and those with lower budgets can consider the Tecno Camon 20 for Ksh.26,500/-
