A few weeks ago, Captain Morgan announces a partnership with Kenyan Genge sensation, Mejja, who will serve as the lead influencer for the brand. We had a word with Mejja, not only about the partnership but about his music as a whole. Here is what he had to say.
Who is Mejja?
I am an entertainer, and I am passionate about music and entertaining my fans. I like telling stories through my music and I feel good when I meet with my fans and they tell me they love my songs. Music is my life. My childhood was humble, we didn’t have much when growing up, but I was happy.
What inspired you to get into music?
My brother inspired me. I grew up in Nyeri in an environment where guys used to freestyle. My bro had a group called Ghetto clan, they used to practice in the evenings, and I would join them and started practicing from there on. I learned to rhyme, and it grew to storytelling and that’s how I grew my interest in Music.
What is the most important thing for you in life?
Being alive is a big win for me, my family and everything around me. I have done shows in Doha, Tanzania and Australia. But being alive and seeing my family happy is my biggest joy.
What is it about the tumbler that you often carry?
My story with the tumbler is interesting because, I would say it is just a habit that I really can’t explain. It started like a joke, I found myself often having a tumbler when I sing my songs and when I hang out with my friends until people noticed and I realized it’s a habit that had stuck with me. It has since become my signature.
You recently partnered with Captain Morgan as the lead influencer. Tell us about that
I am very excited to be appointed the lead influencer for Captain Morgan in Kenya. Everyone know Captain Morgan is the leading Rum in Kenya and being associated with a big brand like this that is also globally known is a great deal for me. The brand aligns with my passion to spice and being unapologetically myself. I do what I love most without fear. My music has never changed, I have been very consistent with my songs and the message I passl. I appreciate Captain Morgan for seeing the reason to partner with me and all I say is God has seen me through a lot in my life and this is just one among the many things I am thankful for.
How do you see this partnership impacting your music career going forward?
The partnership gives me more confidence to continue doing what I do best. It just emphasizes what I believe in, being me and being consistent in everything you do. It also makes me happy because, other people out here including corporates can see the value of what I can bring to the brands and engage with fans and consumers. I am optimistic of many good things to come.
You are one of the pioneers of Genge Music in Kenya, what inspires and motivates you?
Music is my passion; I love it and I do it from the bottom of my heart. There are many people who come into music with various intentions, they want fame and money but for me, music is my life, it is my job, I live, eat and breath music. I like expressing myself through music. When I meet people who are stressed and I speak to them sing for them it makes me feel very good, like I have achieved something. Music transcends tribe and colour, if a song is good it will move people and make them happy. Years have passed by and I’m not here to prove to anyone, I’m just here to make people happy and calm.
My family and my fans keep me going. They have supported me all through and its through music that I have been able to support my family. As long as my fans are happy, that is all that matters. God has been there for me and that gives me the morale to continue recording more hits
What can your fans expect from you?
I am currently working on my first ever album called “Mtoto wa Khadija” which I will be realizing before the end of the year. But before that, I will be releasing my new song very soon. I am also working with upcoming artists on my album.
I have a song with Jay Melody from Tanzania and I am starting an East African group where we will be releasing 4 songs per year.
