Majid Al Futtaim, owner and operator of Carrefour in Kenya, has announced the launch of the ‘Women in Retail Council Kenya’ council to empower its female workforce at Carrefour and champion diversity and inclusion within the organisation. This move signifies Majid Al Futtaim’s efforts towards redefining the workplace for women in the industry; providing a platform enriched with support, resources, and opportunities for personal and career development.
The council aims to foster a conducive work environment and create development opportunities for all female colleagues. Participants will be provided with a comprehensive programme that includes training, mentoring, career guidance, and advice, as well as in-depth retail industry product knowledge.
Christophe Orcet, Regional Director of Carrefour — East Africa, Majid Al Futtaim Retail, commented: “The launch of Women in Retail Council Kenya is a product of our continued efforts towards diversity and inclusion. At Majid Al Futtaim, we aim to continuously elevate the role of our female colleagues by creating incentives to encourage sustainable professional progress and development. Our goal is to be at the forefront of universally shared aspirations towards empowering women in society.”
Since Carrefour’s establishment in the country seven years ago, the company has achieved significant milestones towards diversifying its workforce. The number of female colleagues in managerial positions has more than doubled over the past three years. Today, 23% of female colleagues hold managerial positions. Through its empowerment programme, Majid Al Futtaim aims to double this figure by 2030 as it continues to expand its footprint in the country.
The company continuously looks to provide development opportunities to empower its female workforce through forums and tools. This will be done across all the 20 stores operated by Carrefour in the market; 16 of which are in Nairobi, while Kisumu and Mombasa host two each.
Membership in Women in Retail Council Kenya is extended to all female colleagues of Carrefour, and the organisation encourages all to embrace this network.
