As a forever fan of OPPO devices, it is always exciting to receive a newly launched phone, unbox it, and to go about discovering what new features the company has incorporated. Most recently, I’ve had the pleasure to interact with the all-new OPPO Reno 12 5G which OPPO has updated with new AI features to enhance user experience of the phones.

We will have a deeper look at these features but at a glance, we are looking at AI Eraser with which you can remove objects from photos after taking and saving to the gallery, AI Studio which lends a host of AI presents for users to change photo backgrounds and themes, AI Record summary which will process voice recordings and extract key information into easy-to-read summaries, and AI LinkBoost which boosts signal reception and optimize network selection so that network remains stable even when, say, you get into a lift.

Unboxing

The first thing that struck me upon unboxing the phone when it arrived is just how sleek and stylish it is, just like all other phones in the series. My piece came in a stunning space-age silver which OPPO officially calls Astrol Silver, which features a fluid texture that creates a sensation of dancing in the light. It is quite a visual that I’m seeing for the first time and although I prefer less dramatic phones, I can get used to this.

The back of the phone features only the camera casing and discreet OPPO branding. This goes very well with my love for simplicity and uncluttered designs. The camera bump is barely noticeable when the phone is flat on a surface, pretty much like the OPPO Reno 10 5G which is my current daily device. The bump disappears completely when the protective casing is on.

What’s in the box?

In the box you’ll find the phone, an 80W charging brick, a USB cable, manufacturer literature, a SIM ejector tool and a custom made back protective cover. The phone does not come with earbuds or plugs but it has quite a decent stereo sound from the inbuilt speakers. I’m however using mine with the OPPO Enco Air buds.

I will be doing a comprehensive review after using the phone for some time and I’m excited about discovering more features and putting them to practice. I’m already so excited about doing more with the AI studio which I’ve tried more times than I can count. Such a fan feature to create digital avatars. “Users can reimagine themselves as cowboys, stars in a cyberpunk manga, or many other styles leveraging the new GenAI capabilities” – OPPO.

Keep it here for the review coming soon where we will look more into the design, performance, battery longevity and charging, storage and photography among other features.

OPPO Reno12 and Reno12 F will be available for Pre-order from 23rd August to 1st September 2024. At a Recommended Retail Price of Ksh 69,999 for the Reno12 and Ksh.49,999 for the Reno12 F through OPPO Kenya Website, E-commerce partners, LOOP, and OPPO physical stores across the country.
