Renowned cardiologist, philanthropist and the founder of Karen Hospital Dr. Dan Gikonyo has been hailed as an inspirational figure who has left an undeniable mark on Kenya’s medical and political landscape during the launch of his autobiography Doctor at Heart.
The book not only delves into his life and career but also presents engaging social, economic and political theories and worldviews to readers. In the book, Dr. Dan shares a transcript of a never-before-published interview of the late President Mwai Kibaki that emphasises some of the elements of transformation that he envisages for Kenya.
Speaking at the official launch of Dr. Gikonyo’s autobiography, Kisumu Governor, H.E. Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o applauded the author for his years of dedication to the wellbeing and health of Kenyan’s and his steadfast commitment to humanity.
“Today is a demonstration of the importance of writing our own stories. It is a challenge to professionals with special knowledge to share and use it for the good of humanity. Dr. Dan’s autobiography is a rich book that not only provides lessons from his personal life but societal issues,” he said.
The autobiography, published by East African Educational Publishers (EAEP), not only elaborates Dr. Gikonyo’s journey in the operating room as one of Kenya’s top cardiovascular surgeons, but also delves into the pivotal historical moments such as the pre-colonial struggles of the Mau Mau struggle and the post-colonial multi-party struggles towards Kenya’s second Liberation.
East African Educational Publishers CEO Kiarie Kamau said the autobiography is a not just a narration but a multilayered work of his story and a history of Kenya.
