Kianjakoma Health Center in Embu County is set to benefit from a Ksh. 45 million modern maternity wing, courtesy of the M-Pesa Foundation. The foundation officially broke ground on the project today as part of its commitment to reducing maternal and infant mortality across the country.

Located 20 kilometres from Embu Town, Kianjakoma Health Center has been struggling to meet the increasing demand for maternal and child healthcare services in the region. To address this, the new maternity wing will feature an antenatal and postnatal unit, a newborn unit (NBU), 25 beds, an operating theatre, and a 2-bed delivery room. Additionally, it will be equipped with modern medical technology, enhance service efficiency, and provide a more conducive environment for expectant mothers, ensuring safer deliveries and improved maternal healthcare.

“We invest in health through various programs which address critical needs in our communities. Among these needs is maternal and child health. We partner with County governments in all 47 counties to ensure that the required infrastructure and equipment is in place to enable quality, affordable and accessible services,” said Joseph Ogutu, Chairman, Safaricom Foundation.

The soon-to-be-established maternity wing at Kianjakoma Health Center will greatly enhance maternal healthcare services, providing a safe, comfortable childbirth experience while addressing the increasing need for quality maternity care. Furthermore, it will improve access to essential medical services, equip healthcare professionals with better resources, and strengthen postnatal care for mothers and newborns. With modern facilities, increased capacity, and advanced medical equipment, the wing will also reduce congestion, promote timely interventions, and contribute to lowering maternal and infant mortality rates in the region.

In Embu County, the Foundation has invested over KES 400 million in education, health and economic empowerment projects since 2003 impacting more than 224,000 people. In September last year, the Foundation launched a comprehensive TVET Scholarship program at the University of Embu set to benefit 1,300 students. The Foundation has huge impact all over the country, in line with Safaricom’s brand call of transforming lives.
