Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP), Africa’s largest wind power project, proudly announces the launch of its 2023 Sustainability Report. This event, held at the LTWP project site in Loiyangalani, Marsabit County, marks a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic development.

The 2023 Sustainability Report highlights LTWP’s substantial contributions to Kenya’s economy, energy sector, environment and its continued investment in the development of the Laisamis region that surrounds the wind farm.

LTWP generated 1,481 GWh of clean energy in 2023, accounting for 11.04% of Kenya’s electricity generation and preventing 605,428 tons of CO2 emissions. Our 2023 community investments included the construction of school classrooms, kitchens, dormitories, and a fully equipped maternity ward, impacting nearly every corner of Laisamis Constituency and benefiting approximately 70,000 residents. We also delivered healthcare to 226 people in partnership with Mission to Heal and provided emergency food relief to 67 schools, ensuring 17,700 students received at least one meal a day over three months. These efforts underscore our ongoing commitment to the development of the communities we serve.

Speaking at the launch, Max Schiff, CEO of Lake Turkana Wind Power, expressed his excitement about the event: “At LTWP we focus on doing the right thing and doing it properly. This report is a testament to our unwavering dedication to sustainable development. Our project not only provides clean, renewable energy but also positively impacts the local community by improving access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.”

The LTWP project has consistently demonstrated its impact on the community in Marsabit County, focusing on critical areas such as education, healthcare, water access, and economic empowerment. As part of the launch, attendees, including government officials and industry leaders, had the opportunity to tour the LTWP facilities and witness first-hand the project’s contributions.

Also in attendance, Mr. Mugo Kibati, the Board Chairman of LTWP, noted the importance of partnerships and emphasized the project’s commitment to impactful community development: “The LTWP project stands as a testament to what strategic partnerships can achieve. Our collaboration with the National Government and key stakeholders has been crucial in advancing Kenya’s renewable energy goals. We remain committed to continuing our work in transforming lives in Marsabit County and beyond, as we contribute to a sustainable and prosperous future for Kenya.”

The LTWP project is the largest privately owned investment in Kenya and plays a pivotal role in boosting the country’s renewable energy capacity. The 2023 Sustainability Report highlights the significant savings in financial and carbon costs delivered to Kenyans through the development of the LTWP power plant and the KETRACO Transmission Line.

“The impact of LTWP extends beyond clean energy production. The project is an exemplary example of the benefits that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) can bring to our country. By attracting significant foreign investment, LTWP has bolstered Kenya’s economy and enhanced our global standing as a preferred investment destination in Africa and beyond,” Kibati added.

The launch event included a presentation of the 2023 Sustainability Report, showcasing LTWP’s achievements and future goals, followed by a tour of the wind farm, where attendees witnessed the operational excellence of Africa’s largest wind power facility.
