Kibumbu Caregivers has received a 10,000-litre water tank donation from Kenya Cane, the iconic Kenyan spirit. Based in Chuka, Meru County, this women-led self-help group cares for and supports children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. The donation will enhance their fish farming project, a sustainable venture that helps fund the children’s education and overall well-being.
Beyond the water tank, Kenya Cane has also provided water pipes and buckets to ensure a consistent and reliable water supply, enabling the caregivers to maintain healthy fishponds, increase their harvests, and secure a steady income. This donation reinforces Kenya Cane’s commitment to empowering communities and driving self-sufficiency.
“At Kenya Cane, we believe in celebrating everyday wins, and that includes uplifting the communities that support us. Inspired by Diageo’s purpose of celebrating life every day, everywhere, we are honored to contribute to the incredible work being done by the Kibumbu Caregivers. We hope this support will make a lasting impact on the lives of these women and the children they nurture,” said Davis Changalwa, Brand Manager, Kenya Cane, Kenya Breweries Limited.
Receiving the donation, Caroline Karimi, Chairlady of Kibumbu Caregivers, expressed gratitude for the support, highlighting the group’s journey,
“We came together with one purpose, to support the less fortunate in our community, particularly children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. This donation will go a long way in improving our water storage, allowing us to harvest rainwater, sustain our fish farming, and generate income for the families we support.”
The group which consists of over 30 member was formed by women who found themselves responsible for their grandchildren after losing their children to HIV/AIDS. Faced with economic hardship, they turned to modern farming techniques to secure their livelihoods. Today, their fish farming and agricultural activities not only feed their families but also generate income that supports other vulnerable families within the community.
Kenya Cane remains committed to fostering economic empowerment and sustainable development, ensuring that they give back to the communities.
